Barbecue Bob

The guitar playing of Atlanta bluesman Robert "Barbecue Bob" Hicks is a real enigma. We have Pat Conte to thank for the following setup: Barbecue Bob

course 1: .009/.009
course 2: .012/.012
course 3: .016/.016
course 4: .024/.024
course 5: .032
course 6: .042

Note that the 5th and 5th courses are single strings. They give the bass notes a much "drier" sound that characterizes his recordings, although you could experiment with unison pairs for those courses. The strings used for this setup are much lighter than those used for any of the other setups. Barbecue Bob played a grand-concert sized Stella twelve string (the Angelina is based on the type of guitar he was pictured with) that had a 26 1/2" scale length, but he tuned higher - to about G in Spanish tuning (open G), probably using a capo to reach higher pitches.

All double courses are tuned in unison and the third course is a pair of unwound strings.
